Feisty Stevens: The Zombies Are Inside Out!! (mash-up by Kevan Gilbert)

Hi friends,

I’ve been hard at work at my secret laboratory, trying to mix beats and rhythms together to create something magical, and I think I’ve finally come up with something worth sharing.

Everybody knows Feist by now: Recently featured in an iPod commercial with her video for “1, 2, 3, 4,” she had previously captured people’s attention with her debut album, “Let It Die.” On that album, she did a cover of a Bee Gee’s song called “Inside Out.” It was a sparse and danceable interpretation — like a quiet disco in an empty chapel, maybe. Okay, now that you’ve conjured up the track, hold that sweet thought.

You might also remember weeping (in the van, with your friends) over Sufjan Stevens’ “Illinois” album. One track from that collection was called “They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbours!! They Have Come Back From the Dead! Ahhhh!,” which was also a very groovy song.

Anyway, long story short, I INTRODUCED THEM TO EACH OTHER. Turns out, they loved each other from the start. They only required very minimal adjustments to tempo and pitch before they started rocking, and with a few very careful weeks of tweaking and arranging, they finally produced a likeable, danceable offspring. The result is my most precious mash-up ever.

I present to you: Feisty Stevens – The Zombies Are Inside Out!!

Please share this with your friends, and if you happen to be the friend of a friend of a girl who sings in the choir for Sufjan or plays in the band for Feist, feel free to pass this along, especially since Sufjan says his music isn’t suited to remixes.

    truely amazing
ever think about going into producing
    or being a dj?
    you could work wonders
say some kanye west and johnny cash?

  8. Kevan on Wednesday 14, 2007

Glad you liked the song, Andy.
Peter, you’re too kind — thanks for the props.
Trey, I don’t think I’ll get into producing professionally, but it’s still fun to do from home. Love the Johnny/Kanye idea! Cash’s rhythms are the same military-style beats that Kanye used in “Jesus Walks” – I imagine they’d go well together.

Wow, this is great. Nice job. This is one of my favorite Sufjan songs.

This is just an off-the-cuff suggestion, but it seemed to me that Sufjan’s vocal line “wanted” to come first in the song. Maybe that doesn’t make sense for some reason, but it seemed a little off to me when he entered in much later in the song.

Seriously though. Loved it. I’ll be checking out some of your other stuff.

This is pretty brilliant. Their vocals work so well together, I’ve just been letting it play on repeat over and over again.
Very well done, would love to see more work from you.

I agree with Ben, I think since the beginning of the song was more heavily Zombies intro, we kinda expected Sufjan’s vocal first (or maybe I’ve just heard his song way too much)…but I must say, BRAVO! that was an incredible job and can’t wait to see more from you! <3

Why don’t you live in my living room making mixing wonderfully all day long? (taht sounded a lot less weird in my head).

This is truly the most fantastic thing I have ever heard, apart from the actual artists themselves. I want to suggest a ‘mash up’ but can’t get this one out of my head.

    True genius. Please make more!

Absolutely, totally, magnificent. Unbelievable. My favorite artists of all time, except the Beatles. I was always making Sufjan/Feist CDs, trying to mix the sound a bit, and this is just a glorious mix. Excellent work. Love and appreciate it.

At first I didn’t think the themes of songs meshed properly, but thinking about it, they really do. The tones are deceptively a bit different, but I think they’re coming from similar places really (though it’s always hard to state definitively the meanings behind Sufjan’s songs). And of course the beats are spot on amazing together. Great mashup. I’m sure this one will be popular with my mp3 player.
