Nice piece of work – i am recollecting vinyl to play on my new-retro Crosley player. I am sticking mostly to the .50 bins at thrift stores but there’s a few nuggets i’d love to track down – mostly ones i once owned which were lend, lost, stored, forgotten, thiefed or otherwise vanished.

Nice work, Kevan, you captured the vibe of Rob’s shop and Rob himself. I like that you focused the piece on your first encounter with Rob. It certainly captures the essence of what the place is about: people talking about vinyl and striking deals. The pictures are stellar as well. Tres bon!

Kevan, this is an exceedingly well written and engaging introduction to the secret world of the vinyl trade. While I have to admit I have no use for records since I can’t melt them down and somehow merge them with my ipod I found it all quite fascinating, especially since the first association my mind makes with the word “vinyl” is vintage automobile and dining room upholstery – perhaps your post will help correct this issue…

Well done, Kevan. Rob is my hero. The thing you neglected to mention is how personable he is; he remembers names and tastes. I’ve begun referring to him as “my vinyl dealer” because you never really feel like a customer when you’re in his showroom. Instead, it feels like when two guys get together to talk about and exchange music.

I haven’t had the cash to make a journey down to Rob’s place recently, but every time i have a free afternoon, I consider going anyway, just to see what’s there and what’s new. A few times, I’ve gone down there with no cash, then been absolutely stunned by something new that he has and had to go get some money.
